How does the Hays County Jail inmate search work?

The official Hays County Jail inmate search is part of the county’s public records portal. Go to portal-txhays.tylertech.cloud/PublicAccess and choose Jail Records to look a person up. It is the portal the Hays County Clerk points to for court and jail records. The same page has Jail Bond Records, Criminal Case Records and a Court Calendar.

If the person does not come up, or you would rather ask someone, call the jail at 512-393-7800 or the county’s custody information line at 866-268-8959.

Have these three details ready:

  • The person’s full legal name, spelled the way it appears on their ID. Nicknames and shortened names often will not match.
  • Their date of birth, to tell apart people with the same name.
  • Roughly when and where they were arrested, if you know.

If the inmate search does not find them

A person may not show on the roster right away. After an arrest they have to be booked: searched, fingerprinted and photographed. If the arrest was in the last few hours, check again a little later.

Other reasons a search can come back empty:

  • The name does not match. Try the full legal name, and try different spellings.
  • They have been released. The county says that once a person no longer shows on the inmate search roster, they have been released from custody.
  • They are in a different county’s jail. Parts of San Marcos lie in Caldwell and Guadalupe counties, so an arrest there may be handled by that county and not by Hays County.

When the search does not help, use the phone:

  • Hays County Jail: 512-393-7800
  • Custody information line (IVSS): 866-268-8959. It runs 24 hours a day, in English or Spanish, gives basic custody information, and can call you before a person is released.

Be careful with look-alike inmate search websites

Many websites that come up for “Hays County jail inmate search” are not run by the county. Some are private sites that republish public records, and their information can be out of date.

For anything that matters, such as whether someone is still in custody or what the bond is, use the portal the county points to, or call the jail.

Where the Hays County Jail is

The jail is at 1307 Uhland Road, San Marcos, TX 78666.

Two other county addresses in San Marcos get confused with it:

  • The Sheriff’s Office is listed at 810 S. Stagecoach Trail.
  • The Hays County Government Center, where the courts and the clerks are, is at 712 S. Stagecoach Trail.

If you are picking someone up, you want Uhland Road. Before you go anywhere to pay a cash bond, call the bonding line to confirm where and how to pay.

You found them. How does bail get posted?

In most cases a magistrate has to set bail before anyone can be bonded out. Texas law requires that a person be taken before a magistrate no later than 48 hours after arrest, and Hays County’s magistrates hold hearings seven days a week. Until that happens there may be no bond amount to pay.

Once bail is set, there are three ways to post it:

  • Cash bond. You pay the full amount. It is refundable after the case, less any clerk’s fee, and it can be applied to fines and court costs.
  • Surety bond. You pay a fee to a bail bond company licensed in Hays County, and the company posts the bond for the full amount.
  • Personal bond. The magistrate releases the person on their own promise to appear. It is not available for every charge.

To confirm the bond amount and how the jail wants a cash bond paid, call the jail’s bonding line at 512-393-7807 or 512-393-7690.

Two things the jail will not do: staff cannot contact a bail bondsman for you, and they cannot recommend one. The Hays County Bail Bond Board keeps the list of companies allowed to write bonds in the county.

Our guide to how bail bonds work in Hays County explains each type of bond, and our guide to what a bail bond costs covers the fees.

How long does release take after the bond is posted?

The jail says bonds are processed in the order they are received and that it cannot give a specific length of time. Releases are processed 24 hours a day. How long it takes varies.

The county says a person who no longer shows on the roster has been released. Call the jail to confirm.

Visiting someone in the Hays County Jail

Visits are by appointment. The jail’s visitation line is 512-393-7366. The jail also offers off-site video visits, which can be scheduled seven days a week.

Finding their court date

The jail does not assign or track court dates. Use the same records portal, which has Criminal Case Records and a Court Calendar.

You can also contact the clerk:

  • Felony cases: Hays County District Clerk, 512-393-7660
  • Misdemeanor cases: Hays County Clerk, Courts Division

The bond paperwork states when and where to appear; later dates come from the court.

What to do next
